ISO meet on rubber begins in Kochi

The 57th annual meeting of the ISO TC45 (rubber and rubber products) began at Hotel Le Meridien here on Wednesday to deal with the preparation and developments of quality standards for the rubber industry.

The five-day meeting, with the participation of about 175 delegates from 20 countries, will address issues relating to the creation, revising, updating and deletion of standards pertaining to all sectors of the rubber industry and the materials that are used by the industry.

Bureau of Indian Standards and Ministry of Consumer Affairs are jointly hosting the meeting. The meeting will look into the 145 standards pertaining to the rubber industry.

Speaking to reporters, a senior official in the ISO said that India had developed 236 standards in rubber whereas internationally it is 416. The country is developing the standards as per the industry needs. The standards are not mandatory and the industry has to introduce it voluntarily, he said. Cross industry support from the production and manufacturing sector has been also forthcoming as there is the growing awareness that with the globalisation of the rubber industry, quality consistency and standardisation are keep drivers for market penetration, growth and retention of market shares.

The rubber industry recorded a 24 per cent export growth in the last fiscal in the time of global recession and also posted a good year on year growth as evinced by the performances reported by the major rubber based and rubber related companies. This is also an indication of the wide acceptance Indian rubber and rubber products are gaining around the world, he said.

The plenary session was opened by Mr Christie Roberts, Chairman, ISO TC45.

The delegates are senior techno commercial personnel drawn from all facets of the international rubber industry and include the Natural and Synthetic Rubber production sectors, the tyre sector and the Non Tyre (dry and latex) sectors. Representatives from the top 8 international tyre companies as well as Indian tyre companies are attending the meeting.
