Rice States - Andhra Pradesh Paddy in Godavari delta likely to be hit badly Our Bureau Rajahmundry, Oct. 27 It has been a very bad year for farmers in Andhra Pradesh — what with drought affecting large parts of the State and taking a heavy toll on the kharif crop and later with the Krishna floods ruining crops in five districts earlier this month. To make matters worse for the farmers and the general public, there are reports now that due to poor inflows into the Godavari basin the paddy crop in the Godavari delta may suffer and the irrigation authorities may not be in a position to supply to even one-fourth of the area in the two Godavari districts. This would come as a heavy blow to the delta farmers and the State, which is already reeling under the impact of drought and floods. Irrigation needsIn the two Godavari districts, the total irrigated area under the delta is roughly over a million acres and water is supplied to approximately nine lakh acres of paddy fields during the rabi season. It is estimated that over a 100 tmc ft of water is needed to serve the irrigation needs of the usual rabi acreage. According to the estimates of the irrigation authorities, hardly one-fourth of the required water may be available this rabi season; this is including the inflows from Sileru, a tributary of the Godavari.
