Climate & Weather Copenhagen meet should not end with an ineffective deal: Saran
Mr Shyam Saran Our Bureau New Delhi, Oct. 23 The global warming threat should be tackled by a collaborative approach to ensure that the Copenhagen meet on climate change in December does not settle for a deal that is ineffective, India’s key climate change representative said here on Friday. “There is no doubt that if we say that we are facing an extraordinary challenge that requires extraordinary response, then the least common denominator is not the response that is required,” Mr Shyam Saran, the Prime Minister’s Special Envoy on Climate Change said. Speaking at a discussion on ‘Environment and Conflict Resolution’, Mr Saran said, “These negotiations are being carried out in what I would call the adversarial mode... we are expected to safeguard our interest, try to extract as much from the other side (developed nations) and give as little to other side (developing nations) and the inevitable result of this kind of negotiations is nothing but a common denominator.” The function was also attended by Maldives President, Mr Mohamed Nasheed. Expressing solidarity with the island nation which is facing grave danger of disappearing due to climate change, Mr Saran said that many of the challenges which confront the neighbouring country in many ways confront India as well. “We too have low lying coastal land and in the aftermath of Tsunami we know how it can have severe adverse impact on our economy and people. We are doing everything we can do to save Maldives from threat of climate change,” he added. More Stories on : Climate & Weather | Events
