Kerala orders on tourist boats

Thiruvananthapuram, Oct. 21

The State Government has issued orders implementing its earlier decision to beef up safety in the tourism sector in the light of the boat tragedy at Thekkady. Wearing of life jackets has been made compulsory for those cruising on boats in reservoirs and wildlife sanctuaries. Life jackets should be made available free of charge in boats used for tourism purposes. Tickets should be issued with the names and addresses of the tourists. A life guard should be posted for every 25 passengers. All important water bodies should have a rescue boat with communication facilities, medicine and life-saving equipment. The Tourism Department will issue separate orders in this regard. - Our Bureau
