Plachimada panel has ‘no powers’

Thiruvananthapuram, Oct. 20

The Plachimada Solidarity Committee has demanded formation of a statutory authority to prosecute Hindustan Coca-Cola Company for environmental and other damages caused by its unit at Plachimada. Raising doubts about the efficacy of an 11-member high power committee constituted by the State Government to assess the environmental and other damages caused, the committee convener, Mr R. Ajayan, said here that the former had no powers to decide on petitions seeking compensation . Even if the committee were to recommend realisation of compensation from the Coca-Cola Company, the State Government would hardly be able to do anything about it, he added.
