AP seeks industry views on food processing policy

Hyderabad, Oct. 19

The Andhra Pradesh Government has asked the industry to come out with specific suggestions as it evolves a food processing policy for the year 2010-11.

Making a presentation on the State Government’s plan for food processing industry here on Monday, Ms I. Rani Kumudini, Secretary (Govt of AP), has asked the Federation of Andhra Pradesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FAPCCI) to submit product-wise suggestions. “We will discuss the suggestions at appropriate forums, before incorporating important issues in the upcoming Food Processing Policy,” she said.

Workshop

Appealing to the industry to discuss the issue in detail, she said the Government would sponsor a State-wide workshop. “Without waiting for the final policy to come up, we can start off with training services.

FAPCCI can think of starting consultancy services and identifying potential investors for pilots meanwhile,” she pointed out.

Mr M.V. Rajeshwara Rao, Secretary-General of FAPCCI, said the quantity of food processed in the country was less than two per cent as against 65-75 per cent in Thailand, Malaysia and Brazil.

Mr L. Mohan, Director of Animal Husbandry (Government of Andhra Pradesh), said the real challenge was maintaining quality.

“We get the produce from the masses from diverse regions. This (quality) is a constraint that needs to be addressed,” he said.
