Pfizer launches book on clinical trials

Our Bureau

Hyderabad, Oct. 18 Pfizer India last week launched an Indian version of a ‘Speaking Book for clinical trial participation’, as part of the initiatives of the global pharma major to build up capacities for taking up clinical trials in developing countries.

At present, about 75 per cent of clinical trials of Pfizer is concentrated in North America and Europe. “Now we are trying to build capacities in developing countries with exactly the same standards as we have in North America and Europe,” Dr Soeren Rasmussen, Senior Director (External Medical Affairs), Pfizer Inc, told Business Line.

According to a report by McKinsey, global pharmaceutical majors will spend between $1 and $1.5 billion on drug trials in the country by 2010. The report states that India has the largest pool of patients with many diseases, including cancer and diabetes. It is felt that low literacy levels is leading to lack of proper understanding of patients’ rights and duties.

The ‘speaking book’, launched by Pfizer India, aims to increase awareness about participation in clinical research, explaining the rights and responsibilities of participants, using audio components in local languages.

The company has invested $200,000 to bring out the book and will distribute 12,000 books across the country.

“In addition to promoting transparency and awareness of patients’ rights, the speaking book offers an innovative medium to promote health awareness among the poor and illiterate population,” Dr Rasmussen said.
