Shippers meet in Dubai

This year’s global shippers’ conference will be held in Dubai from November 2 to 4 and attended by shippers from Europe, America and Asia. Being organised by Global Shippers’ Forum (GSF) in partnership with the European Shippers’ Council, a GSF member, the conference will have the theme Local Options in Global Solutions. The focus of the conference, it is learnt, will be on how the issues that affect shippers may differ from region to region. It mig ht be noted that the 5th annual meeting of the Asian Shippers Council held in Colombo some time ago and hosted by Sri Lanka Shippers’ Council extensively discussed the issues facing the shippers of the region and exchanged various regulatory reforms being initiated by the member countries. The ASC members were unanimous in their view that there was a need to forge closer cooperation among various global shippers’ bodies under the aegis of GSF, which also talked about the same theme at its annual general meeting in London in September. Various regional shippers’ organisations have voiced their concern over what is known as Rotterdam Rules, pointing out that the rules were skewed against shippers’ interests. The Colombo meeting of ASC, therefore, constituted a committee – comprising Mr R. Venkatesh of Western Indian Shippers Association, Mumbai, and Mr Sunny Ho of Hong Kong Shippers Council – to study the rules and make recommendations.
