ISB expects ‘better’ placements this year

G. Naga Sridhar

Hyderabad, Oct. 15

Indian School of Business (ISB) is hoping that the campus placements will be better than those of last year as the recession appears waning.

“The first trends in hiring are coming from global companies. The indications are very favourable,” Mr V. K. Menon, Senior Director, Career Advancement Services, ISB, told Business Line.

About 60 international companies have already registered to participate in the campus hiring programme which runs from November to March. The registration of the domestic companies is currently on. For the Class of 2009, 322 recruiters had participated in the hiring programme. The interest of the recruiters is ‘profound’ in sectors such as consulting, marketing and finance. “Experts in finance, wealth management, corporate finance and mergers and acquisitions are in demand. In addition, there is traction in the health sector. Internationally, a lot of hiring is happening in this,” Mr Menon added.

CHALLENGE

The Class of 2010 will pose a challenge to ISB as it is the largest batch with 572 students on its roll compared with 437 who had graduated in April this year.

The high-profile business school had a bitter experience as about 100 students who graduated from the Class of 2009 could not get a job offer in the campus placements because of recession, perhaps for the first time in its history.

The ISB Board of Governance, headed by Mr Rajat Gupta, had even gone to the extent of assuring the students that they would “do their best and use their good offices in the industry to get the students placed.”

The main reason for the problem was a marked decline in the number of openings this year at almost all corporates.

However, the mood now appears little different. “We have a rolling placement system from January to end of March. We hope all our students will be comfortably placed during this period,” Mr Menon said.
