The Hindu Business Line : Coir exports grow 10-12%

Kochi, Oct. 14 Exports of coir and coir products from the country registered a growth of 12.5 per cent in quantity and 10.51 per cent in value from April to September, indicating revival of the global export market.

The exports touched 1,10,470 tonnes valued at Rs 351.46 crore during the period as against 98,162 tonnes valued at Rs 318.02 crore recorded during the same period of the previous year.

Coir mats, however, registered a marginal decline of 2 per cent, while in value terms it registered a growth of 7 per cent over the previous year.

Reviewing the export performance for the current fiscal at its 198th board meeting, the Chairman of Coir Board, Mr V.S. Vijayaraghavan, expressed confidence that the coir export target of Rs 700 crore for 2009-10 would be surpassed.

The meeting also reviewed the problem of coir fibre and yarn shortage being felt in the production sector, following the unprecedented export of coir fibre, and considered the proposal for revival of defunct coir fibre extraction units established under the Integrated Coir Development Project, with the support of the State Government, to overcome the problem of fibre scarcity to some extent.

The board decided to represent to the Centre for enhancement of incentives to the export oriented coir industry.

It also approved a proposal for organising the Golden Jubilee Celebrations of the Central Coir Research Institute (CCRI), Kalavoor, later this year along with an exposition to highlight the technological upgradation taken place in the production sector and the contributions of the CCRI and the Central Institute of Coir Technology, Bangalore, in this regard.

Mr Rameswar Goel, President of Delhi Coir Dealer’s Association, was elected Vice-Chairman of the board for a year.
