Nobel as a deterrent

Apropos the reproduced article “Prize for promise, not performance” (Business Line, October 12), past US presidents, despite their promises to the contrary, have proved to be prisoners of their administration which has been able to prevail upon them to act on a set role as expected from a global economic, political and military super power.

The Nobel prize awarded to Mr Barack Obama may help him chart out a path free from violence and allow him to persuade the warring parties to go for negotiated settlements without the backing of a superpower.
