Workshop on minerals sector begins

New Delhi, Oct. 11

The Minister of Mines, Mr B.K. Handique, inaugurated a two-day workshop, with stakeholder the Development and Regulations of Mines and Minerals sector, in the capital on Friday. Delivering his keynote address on the occasion, Mr Handique said that the minerals sector contribution to the national GDP, which is currently 2.5 per cent, should increase to 5 per cent. He highlighted the need to ensure that the growth of the mining sector is environmentally sustainable. The two-day workshop will discuss concessions, reconnaissance licence and prospecting licence, mining lease, and mineral concessions in cases where they do not vest exclusively with Government reservation, among other issues. About 160 geologists and mining officials from State Governments, Geology Survey of India, Indian Bureau of Mines and representatives from Mineral and Mines industries are participating in the deliberations. - Our Bureau
