Kozhikode, Oct. 11

The first Ecosan biogas plant in Kerala has been unveiled at the Central Market of Kozhikode Corporation.

The plant, capable of processing fish, meat and vegetable wastes, was constructed by the State-owned Kerala Agro Industries Corporation using the design and technology developed by Aware Ecotrust, the corporations’s nodal agency.

The plant was set up with the approval of the ‘Clean Kerala Mission’ and at a project cost of Rs 27.60 lakh. It is based on the ‘Neda’ RCC Fixed Dome Model of the Central Non-conventional Renewable Energy Agency and has a capacity to process two tonnes of organic wastes a day.

The plant will produce 60-70 cubic metres of gas daily, which will be distributed to the neighbouring hotels and others at a fixed rate. In the second phase, the gas from the plant will be used for lighting the electric bulbs in the market.
