Ahmedabad, Oct. 9 The country’s power capacity will be doubled by 2012, said Mr S. Jagadeesan, Principal Secretary, Energy and Petrochemicals Department, Government of Gujarat, at the India Energy Conclave 2009, organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry.

Wind energy

The growth would be driven by wind energy in renewable energy resources where only 5 per cent of the proposed 10,000 MW of projects have been achieved.

“Gujarat would play a significant role in (developing) renewable energy resources. The capacity of power production in the State is 11,011 MW.

Demand

“The projected peak demand is estimated to be 14,374 MW. The planned capacity confirmed is 8,248 MW. “By 2012 the State aims to achieve 19,259 MW as there are many proposals in the pipeline for the 12th plan,” he said. “In the coming five years, the country is to witness large energy investments in private and public sectors, which will enable augmentation of 15-26 per cent of PSU investments,” said Mr Sudhir Trehan Chairman, Managing Director, Crompton Greaves Ltd. He emphasised on the need for sustainable growth while taking care of the environment.

Intra state grids

Mr Nitin Shukla, Group Chief Executive Officer of Shell Hazira Gas, spoke of the need of intra-State grids for equal power distribution across the country. To fill the gap of power supply a special allocation should be done for SMEs and tier-II cities, he said.
