Our Bureau

Thiruvananthapuram, Oct. 7 The Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management-Kerala (IIITM-K) will offer two new programmes under the Special Postgraduate Education Expansion Drive in IT (Speed-IT) launched by the State Government.

The new programmes, Master of Science in Information Technology and M Phil in Ecological Informatics, are open for admission during the current academic year itself, a spokesman for IIITM-K said here.

SCHOLARSHIP AID

The courses are recognised by the Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat). The Masters students will be eligible for a scholarship of Rs 8,000 a month.

Two hundred scholarships for Masters are available for the current year.

The scheme is being introduced with a view to expanding the talent pool of postgraduates in IT and related sectors as well as attracting students into Masters and PhD programmes in IT and IT related disciplines.

FLAGSHIP PROGRAMME

Giving details, the spokesman said that the Master of Science in Information Technology is the flagship programme offered by the IIITM-K. It aims at setting high standards in basic and applied sciences, technology, management, and information system. The degree will be awarded by the Cusat.

It is a rigorous postgraduate programme in IT and provides an innovative learning environment with emphasis on fundamentals and advanced topics in IT, managerial skills, interpersonal skill sets, and hands-on experience.

The curriculum is designed to provide a balance between subject-specific concepts and skills, appreciation of professional maturity and a host of soft skills, which are suited for R & D institutions and industry.

Extensive use of technology-enhanced learning methodologies together with Web-based course management and on-line learning systems will enrich programme delivery and facilitate students to broaden their horizons.

PROVEN RECORD

IITM-K has a proven track record of placing its students in the best of IT organisations.

Ecological Informatics (EI) is a trans-disciplinary subject that integrates ecology, computational sciences, informatics and social sciences for improving our understanding of ecological processes.

The socio-ecological basis covers the earth’s natural systems, human values, human health and well-being. A suite of disciplines – ecology, informatics, computational sciences, ecological economics, anthropology, sociology and demography – constitute EI.

Last date of application for both the courses is October 20, 2009, the spokesman said.
