Shipping/Ports Industry & Economy - Natural Calamities States - Andhra Pradesh Bad weather hits Vizag, Gangavaram port operations Our Bureau Kolkata, Oct. 6 Cyclonic weather has badly hit rail movement to and from Viskhapatnam and Gangavaram ports served by the East Coast Railway (ECoR). “For three days, Ocotober 2, 3 and 4, the normal operation at Gangavaram virtually came to a standstill due to waterlogging,” according to a spokesman for ECoR which loads on an average four rakes a day at the port. “It is now limping back to normal and today (Tuesday) we hope to load about three rakes”. At the Visakhapatnam port, no loading of POL rakes was possible for three days. ECoR loads on an average two to three POL rakes a day at the port. The loading of fertiliser and bulk cargo rakes too was hit. ECoR is currently loading about six rakes of bulk cargoes against the normal 10/11 and four rakes of fertiliser against the usual six. The total daily loading thus has dropped to around 10 from the normal 18/19 rakes. While the loading of POL rake is to resume soon, the resumption of normal operation at the port would take time, it is felt. Fortunately, the cyclone has spared Paradip which reports normal rail movement. The movement of both inward (14 ) and outward (10/11) rakes at the port had been normal, the spokesman added.
