Genesis Colors eyes kidswear segment

Bindu D. Menon

New Delhi, Oct. 5 Genesis Colors, the holding company of designer brands Satya Paul, Shobhaa De’ and the lingerie brand Bwitch, has said it is looking to enter the kidswear market by next year.

The company, which received a capital infusion of Rs 110 crore from Sequoia Capital Fund, Mayfield Fund and Silicon Valley Bank last year, also said it would be strengthening the retail footprint of the brands under its umbrella.

“We are quite excited about the children’s wear market. We are in talks with several players to enter the category,” Mr Jyoti Narula, Managing Director, Genesis Colors, said without divulging details.

The company formed ‘Genesis Luxury’ last year to market and distribute European luxury brands Canali, Kenzo, Paul Smith, Jimmy Choo, Just Cavalli and Aigner in India.

“Our luxury portfolio has registered 50 per cent growth during the slowdown. This is a good indicator that the category is here to stay,” he said.

Speaking on its expansion plans, Mr Narula said the company was keen to bring in more international brands under its ambit.

Lingerie and accessories would form the crux of its expansion plans. Its recent tie-up with London-based fashion label Tie Rack would allow it to hawk its accessories. Also, the Bwitch brand would help it gain a foothold in the nightwear and lingerie market. “We will be adding about 15,000-20,000 sq. feet during the current fiscal. A typical 1,000-sq. feet store needs an investment of Rs 75 lakh,” he said, adding, “For Bwitch, we are looking at setting up shop-in shops and may be a standalone store over the next two years.”

He added that the company was hopeful that its range of accessories would elicit a good response, especially as corporate gifts, during the festival season.
