Huge volumes withdrawn at Coonoor tea sales

Substantial volumes remained unsold despite dropping the prices at Sale No: 40 of the auctions of Coonoor Tea Trade Association (CTTA) as post-pooja purchases were yet to commence.

Although the volume of 14.17 lakh kg offered was lower than the previous week by 53,000 kg, demand was inadequate. As much as 51 per cent of the 9.82 lakh kg leaf and 47 per cent of the 4.35 lakh kg of dust offered for sale remained unsold for want of bids at base price.

Orthodox leaf

“Orthodox leaf market fell Rs 2-4 a kg. High-priced CTC leaf market eased Rs 2-3 and better medium Rs 1-3. Almost 80 per cent of the plainers were withdrawn as there were no takers at base price. Primary orthodox dust market eased Rs 5-10, but the rest gained Rs 1-2. High priced CTC dusts eased Rs 1-2. Almost 65 per cent of the medium and plainers were withdrawn.

Kannavarai Estate and Professor got Rs 116.50 each, Hittakkal Estate Rs 114.50, Blue Monte Estate Rs 114, Homedale Estate and Selva Ganapathy Supreme Rs 112.50 each. In all, 32 grades fetched Rs 100 and more. Among orthodox teas from corporate sector, Curzon, Chamraj, Corsley and Kairbetta got Rs 150 each, Kodanaad Rs 142, Glendale Rs 138 and Mailoor Rs 137. In all, 38 grades fetched Rs 100 and more. Quotations held by brokers indicated bids ranging from Rs 58-62 a kg for plain leaf grades and Rs 85-102 for brighter liquoring sorts.
