Our Bureau

New Delhi, Oct. 3 India has been elected the second vice-chair of G-24, a grouping of developing countries. The G-24 was established in 1971 and comprises countries from Africa, Latin America, the Carribean and Asia.

At a G-24 meeting held in Istanbul, the Finance Minister, Mr Pranab Mukherjee, was elected unanimously as the Second Vice-Chair. Mr Mukherjee will automatically become the first Vice-Chair in 2010-11 and then in 2011-12 be elevated as the Chair of G-24 countries, an official release said. Till now, Syria was the Chair, with Brazil the first Vice-Chair and South Africa the second Vice-Chair.

After Saturday’s meeting, Brazil has become the Chair, South Africa the first Vice-Chair and India the second Vice-Chair. All these three countries form part of the IBSA grouping, the release added.

The G-24 operates at two levels — the political level of Ministers of Finance/Central Bank Governors and the level of officials designated as the deputies.
