New Projects Samsung to expand Chennai facility Our Bureau Chennai, Oct. 1 Pepped up by the current growth in demand for consumer durables, Samsung India Electronics is all set to expand its Chennai facility to manufacture durables such as air-conditioners and refrigerators. Samsung currently manufactures these products at its Noida plant. As this plant’s capacity is saturated, it now plans to set up new lines at its 80-acre Sriperumbudur facility in Chennai to manufacture these products. Set up in 2007 to manufacture flat-screen colour TVs and washing machines, the Sriperumbudur facility is now manufacturing LCD TVs and LCD monitors too. Of the proposed investment of $100 million, the company has so far invested $30 million in this facility. “The remaining $70 million will be invested over the next two years for our future expansions,” said Ms Ruchika Batra, spokesperson of the company. Samsung also plans to make its Chennai facility an export hub. Currently, the company’s exports (worth Rs 530 crore) are mostly from its Noida unit. This year, Samsung expects to double its exports. Of the company’s 80 acres of land at Sriperumbudur, 23 acres have been used to produce 60,000 LCD TVs, 70,000 LCD monitors, 1.5 million flat-screen TVs and 50,000 front-loadng washing machines.
