`Retain PDS rice prices'

Our Bureau

Thiruvananthapuram, Sept. 28

The Food and Civil Supplies Minister, Mr C. Divakaran, has demanded that the Centre shelve its plan for increasing the price of PDS rice. If this was not workable, it should provide subsidy to the States in proportion to the increase, an official spokesman quoted the Minister as saying here. The Centre's announcement that the price was due for revision would only help the traders' lobby and hoarders. The Centre had sought to increase the price of grain for public distribution, while promising food security to all through legislation. This was unfortunate, the Minister said. - Our Bureau
