Narayana Murthy, most sought after CEO at ISB

G. Naga Sridhar

Hyderabad, Sept. 26 Mr N.R. Narayana Murthy, Chief Mentor, Infosys Technologies Ltd, appears to have been enjoying great admiration among the management students, if the opinion of students of Indian School of Business is any indication to go by.

Mr Murthy could trigger the highest bid amount from the students among the 26 top CEOs of the country who participated in the ‘Shadow a CEO’ programme of ISB.

The programme is meant to train the managers by giving them an opportunity to see and learn from successful CEOs by being with them for one full day. As part of the programme, students who preferred to spend a day with the CEO of their choice participated in an ‘auction’ indicating the amount they were ready to spend for the purpose.

According to ISB functionary, in all 1,196 bids were made. The aggregate of the top bids for all the 26 CEOs amounts to Rs 6.80 lakh without matching grant by CEOs. The highest bidders for both the women CEOs were female students. The sectors of prime interest were IT, Real Estate, Finance, Consulting, apart from conglomerates.

Other CEOs who are part of the programme included Mr Adi Godrej, Chairman and Managing Director of Godrej Group; Mr Kumar Mangalam Birla, Chairman of Aditya Birla Group; Ms Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, CMD of Biocon; Mr Deepak Parekh, Chairman of HDFC; Mr Ajay Piramal, Chairman of Piramal Enterprises; and Mr G.V. Prasad, CEO, of Dr Reddy’s.

However, the programme also has a social angel as the CEO chosen could give a matching grant to the amount raised by the students and the proceeds would go to a NGO. “We encourage our students to take on socially responsible ventures and become social entrepreneurs and use the power of business to improve the society,” said Mr Ajit Rangnekar, Dean, ISB.

Though the programme was open only to ISB students, going by the popularity of the programme, ISB might consider a broader design of the programme in future.
