Unitech Enterprises unveils energy-saving cooling systems

To collaborate with German manufacturers.

By pumping in fresh air, the load taken by the air-conditioner is brought down and cooling is achieved in a much shorter time. This brings about significant energy savings

V. Rishi Kumar

Hyderabad, Sept. 23 Unitech Enterprises has introduced the Hydronic Radient Cooling (HRC) Systems, energy recovery ventilators and turnkey energy saving systems in the country in collaboration with German manufacturers.

These cooling systems and energy recovery solutions work out costlier than the traditional air-conditioning equipment but help save on energy in the long term, according to Mr Pankaj Khara, Director of Mumbai-based Unitech Enterprise.

Thermal radiation

Speaking to Business Line during the Green Building Congress 2009, Mr Khara said the HRC system brings about cooling through a process of thermal radiation as opposed to forced convection (as in conventional air-conditioners). This is similar to what bottle coolers do to cool bottles.

“Water from outside is circulated along the walls where this system is installed and circulated through fine pipes. This is similar to the heating and cooling systems in the UK and Europe. We believe commercial establishments will deploy these solutions,” he said.

It is like the temple basement or cellar where temperatures are lower than the ground floor mainly due to the cooler surroundings. The HRC system does not remove moisture from the air.

The indoor air quality is another major concern for developers. Through energy recovery ventilators it is possible to keep air fresh. Little do people realise that they are always breathing bad air in split air-conditioning environment. By pumping in fresh air, the load taken by the air-conditioner is brought down and cooling is achieved in a much shorter time. This brings significant energy savings. The energy recovery ventilators would help tackle ‘sick building syndrome’ where it is difficult to cut the chain of infections, he explained.

SIMULATION through software

With software and technology tools it is possible to simulate how these heating and cooling systems bring efficiencies in a work environment, said Mr Rohan Rawte, Vice-President, SimCosm India, based in Pune. Software creates a virtual environment demonstrating its benefits and thereby helps buyers make informed decisions, Mr Rawte said.
