The Hindu Business Line : Panel on iron ore handling to visit Paradip port on Sept 26

A high-power team constituted by the Shipping Ministry and headed by Capt P.V.K. Mohan, Chairman of the National Shipping Board, will visit the Paradip port on September 26.

The committee will examine the iron ore handling facilities at various ports, the types of iron ore vessels calling at the ports for loading and why so many iron ore vessels, many of them unfit for undertaking sea voyages and with no firm loading programmes, hang around in the Indian waters.

The accidents involving a few iron ore vessels in Indian waters in the past few months is believed to be causing concern to the Government.

The Union Shipping Minister, Mr G.K. Vasan, therefore, would like the committee to examine the issues relating to iron ore shipments.

Meanwhile, the body of the deceased chief engineer of the ill-fated ship, m.v. Black Rose, that sank off the Paradip port a few days ago, was found following a search undertaken by the marine staff of the Paradip Port Trust with the help of Dipti Engineering, engaged by the port authorities for the purpose.
