Bambino to launch ‘functional food’ products

Our Bureau

Hyderabad, Sept. 19 Vermicelli manufacturer Bambino Agro Industries has set its sights on the ‘functional food’ segment, whose market size is estimated at Rs 200 crore.

“We are going to launch the functional product with Ayurvedic ingredients in April 2010. We are engaged in clinical trials on a couple of products,” Mr P. Easwara Das, Executive Director of Bambino, said.

Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, he said these ingredients would add nutritional value to the food. He, however, refused to spell out what these ingredients were.

The company, which registered a turnover of Rs 220 crore for the 18-month period ended September 2008, was looking at achieving revenues of Rs 265-270 crore by the end of September 2009.

Despite registering a turnover of Rs 220 crore last year, the net profit stood at Rs 36 lakh. Asked why the profit margin was low, he said the company was trying to bring in value addition to the product line in order to improve profits.

The company was also trying to tap the rural market with Rs 5 a packet of vermicelli. It produces 3,500-4,000 tonnes of vermicelli a month.
