Telecommunications DoT cuts penalty for roll-out lags Our Bureau New Delhi, Sept. 18 The Department of Telecom has reduced the penalty major operators have to pay for not fulfilling the roll-out obligations. The fee has been reduced to Rs 135 crore from Rs 450 crore. The reduction comes after the DoT diluted the roll-out norms in line with the demands made by the operators. The Department had diluted the roll-out conditions for mobile companies by allowing them to fulfil their obligation within one year from the date of getting spectrum. Earlier the date of grant of licence was taken to calculate the roll-out targets. The DoT had also decided that in buildings, coverage will not be made mandatory for operators. Earlier norms made it compulsory for operators to cover the interiors of each building in a district. The DoT has already notified these amendments in the cellular licence. All the operators together would have had to pay close to Rs 450 crore as penalties had these changes not been made.
