ESPN Star unveiled the ICC Champions Trophy 2009 on Thursday. The channel announced that it had sold syndication rights for the event, to be held in South Africa, in 183 countries.

The ESPN Software India Managing Director, Mr R.C. Venkateish, was upbeat about the upcoming Champions Trophy and said, “There will be 160 spots of 30 seconds each/match.”

Mr Ventakteish played down fears that 50-over cricket is losing out in popularity to Twenty-20 cricket.

He said, “the real test for the popularity of one-day and test cricket is TRP ratings. At present, both forms of the game continue to get high TRP ratings.”

He further added that the channel had received a positive response from advertisers for the Champions Trophy. Eight sponsors, including Maruti Suzuki, Samsung, Bajaj Auto and Tata Motors, have been signed up Mr Venkateish said.

“We have signed seven clients as sponsors and an additional eight corporates for spot-buys on live as well as pre/post programming,” Mr Venkateish added. The 15 matches would be telecast live on ESPN and Star Cricket. The tournament starts on September 22 and ends on October 5.
