BSNL offers cheap PC, broadband for rural areas

New Delhi, Sept. 16 Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd has partnered HCL Infosystems to bundle a desk-top personal computer with a broadband connection for Rs 399 a month targeted at the rural users.

Subscribers will have to pay an upfront fee of Rs 2,250 for acquiring the PC. The scheme is being supported by the Universal Services Obligation Fund under the Department of Telecom, which will give BSNL a subsidy of Rs 4,500 for a connection.

The project is estimated to utilise a total of Rs 1,500 crore from the fund. Subscribers will get a software package developed by Microsoft and a five-year free maintenance from HCL.
