WS Ind mulls shift to high-voltage transmission

Our Bureau

Chennai, Sept. 16 Chennai-based W.S. Industries (India) Ltd is banking on the shifting trend in favour of high-voltage (800 kV) transmission, where the competition is also less, for more business.

The Rs 233-crore company currently has an order book of Rs 200 crore, 50 per cent of which is for 800 kV insulators. The company expects to achieve a turnover of Rs 250 crore this year.

Speaking to media after the annual general meeting, Mr Narayan Sethuramon, Managing Director, said the company began manufacturing 800 kV insulators a couple of years ago.

However, currently only a small portion of its sub-station insulator capacity of its Chennai plant is utilised. Going forward, about 35 per cent of the capacity will be earmarked to produce these insulators. The Chennai plant has an installed capacity of 18,000 tonnes to make transmission line and substation insulators for 220 kV and 400 kV ratings.

The first phase of its Visakhapatnam plant with an annual capacity of 5,000 tonnes of sub-station insulators began commercial production in July but, today, only about half the capacity is utilised.
