Plantations Meet ‘takes off’ sans minister
Standing in: The Deputy Chairperson of the Tea Board, Ms Roshni Sen, arriving along with the Upasi Secretary-General, Mr Ullhas Menon (left), and the President, Mr D.P. Maheswari (second from right), to inaugurate the 116th annual conference of the planters’ association in Coonoor on Tuesday. – L.N. Revathy Coimbatore, Sept. 15 It was not just the four Commodity Board Chairmen who gave the UPASI conference this year a miss. The Union Minister for Labour and Employment, Mr Mallikarjun Kharge, who was supposed to inaugurate the 116th annual conference of UPASI this morning, did not to turn up. Coincidence or not, UPASI officials seemed disappointed about the turn of events. They had till an hour before the scheduled time of the conference hoped that the Minister, who was to fly in from Bangalore and reach Coonoor by road via Coimbatore, would grace the occasion. But it was not to be. “The Minister reached the airport, but there was a delay in the flight schedule. We later learnt that the flight took off on schedule, but the Minister had returned,” a top UPASI official said, giving a graphic dimension to the turn of events. The Deputy Chairperson of Tea Board, Ms Roshni Sen, inaugurated the conference. More Stories on : Plantations
