New Delhi, Sept. 14 India signed a bilateral agreement with Mongolia on uranium supply on Monday. This was done during the Mongolian President, Mr Tsakhia Elbegdorj’s four-day visit to India.

The memorandum of agreement on “development of cooperation in the field of peaceful uses of radioactive minerals and nuclear energy” was signed by senior officials in the department of atomic energy of the two countries.

Mongolia becomes the fifth country after the US, France, Russia and Kazakhstan to sign a civil nuclear cooperation agreement with India.

There were four more bilateral agreements signed between the two countries and India also approved a $25-million soft loan to Mongolia.

The agreements relate to stabilisation loan assistance, health and medical science, cooperation in statistical matters and a cultural exchange programme for 2009-12.

He also stressed on improving bilateral ties with India. He said, “This visit will give emphasis to the development of our bilateral relations in many different avenues and prospects and we do believe in elevating our relationships to a newer level.”

Bilateral ties

The Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, said that bilateral ties have been raised to the level of a “Comprehensive Partnership” and added that a joint declaration would be issued that would chart out the future course of relations.

“We also attach importance to our expanding defence exchanges and co-operation with Mongolia, including regular joint exercises between our armies. We have agreed to strengthen our co-operation in this area. We have agreed to continue to work together closely on regional and international issues, including combating terrorism and reform of the UN Security Council, to advance our shared interests,” he added.
