Our Bureau Chennai, Sept. 12 Tata Consultancy Services will use the data centre at the Software Technology Parks of India facility in Chennai for disaster recovery for its e-passport service. It will take the data centre on a seven-year lease, Dr Omkar Rai, Senior Director, STPI, said. TCS has taken half of the Chennai’s data centre and will annually pay around Rs 3 crore to STPI. “This is a major commercial business for us,” he said. An official of TCS last week said the company was hoping to implement the Centre’s ambitious Rs 1,000-crore “Passport Seva Project” at six pilot locations from October and will take this to 77 by June 2010. He ascribed the delay in the implementation to the unavailability of disaster recovery Web site. STPI will also use the Chennai data centre to promote various applications under www. India.in, Dr Rai told newspersons on the sidelines of Connect2009, the ICT event organised by the CII in association with the Tamil Nadu Government. The portal is a platform for information dissemination and knowledge sharing. STPI and MTNL are jointly working on this venture, he said. Dr Rai said STPI has invited bids for setting-up two more data centres in Hyderabad and Delhi of 6,000 sq.ft each. It also plans to set up such centres in Chandigarh. “Data centre is going to be the future,” he said. The investment in the Chennai data centre is around Rs 30 crore, while it will cost much lesser in other centres, he said. More Stories on : Software | Tata Consultancy Services Ltd
