‘Marina will enhance Kochi tourism scope’

Kochi, Sept. 10

The city will become the gateway for national tourism once the international marina of the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation is commissioned here in November, Mr Cheriyan Philip, Chairman, KTDC, has said.

He was speaking after inaugurating a training programme for tourist drivers at Ernakulam YMCA Hall, as part of the responsible tourism drive taken up by the District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC).

The marina, which will have facilities for berthing nearly 50 yachts, will enhance the tourism potential of Kochi to match international standards.

Along with promoting tourism potential, a new tourism culture needs to be developed. Tourist drivers who can welcome and guide tourists in a courteous manner, will be the icons of this new tourism culture, he said.

The State has evolved as a tourist destination. While Thiruvananthapuram receives most of the foreign tourists, the domestic tourists prefer Thrissur. On the other hand, Kochi was a favourite for both international and domestic tourists.

The city can evolve as a tourist destination on the lines of Venice, he said.

The DTPC has been issuing identity cards for drivers for the past one year.
