Trade & Labour Unions Port unions withdraw strike call Our Bureau Kochi, Sept. 10 The five recognised federations of port and dock workers decided to call off the proposed nationwide strike at major ports on September 15 following the settlement arrived at in the presence of the Minister for Shipping, Mr G.K. Vasan, in New Delhi. Mr S.R. Kulkarni, President, All India Port and Dock Workers Federation, said in statement that the Minister had resolved the dispute between the Indian Ports Association and the Federations by announcing 23 per cent fitment benefit on the aggregate amount of Basic Pay + 78.2 per cent DA with effect from January 1, 2007 without any condition. The settlement will be for five years with effect from January 1, 2007 and the revised minimum Basic Pay of Port and Dock Workers will be increased by Rs 1,516 in line with the Settlement. The existing Settlement expired on December 31, 2006. Besides the Minister, the meeting was attended by the Minister of State for Shipping, Mr Mukul Roy; the Shipping Secretary, Mr A.P.V.N. Sarma; the Chairman of Indian Ports Association, Mr S.S. Hussain; the Chairman, Mumbai Port Trust, Mr Rahul Asthana, ; the Chairman, Cochin Port Trust, Mr N. Ramachandran; and other senior officials.
