GACL investing Rs 98 cr for expanding hydrogen peroxide plant capacity

Our Bureau

Ahmedabad, Sept. 8 State-owned Gujarat Alkalies and Chemicals Ltd (GACL) today announced plans to increase production of hydrogen peroxide to more than 39,000 tonnes per annum (tpa) with an investment of Rs 98 crore at its Dahej complex in Bharuch district.

The project, to increase the capacity from 25,080 tpa to 39,080 tpa, is expected to be on stream in financial year 2010-11, making GACL the largest producer of hydrogen peroxide in India, a company official said.

This is one of the projects lined up by GACL for expanding capacities in the next three years at an investment of Rs 2,600 crore.

The company commissioned its first hydrogen peroxide plant in 1996 at Vadodara and the second at Dahej in 2007, with capacity totalling 25,080 tpa. The technology for the expansion project has been tied up with Chematur Engineering AB, Sweden, which given the technical know-how for the Dahej plant.

The present production capacity of hydrogen peroxide in India is about 80,000 tpa, with National Peroxide, Asian Peroxide, and Hindustan Organics being the other big players. This production capacity is not adequate to meet the country’s requirement.

GACL, the largest producer of caustic soda in India, will use hydrogen, a co-product from its caustic soda plant, for value addition in the form of hydrogen peroxide. The existing facilities will also be utilised to make available other inputs and utilities for the expansion project.
