Concor operations in Durgapur hit

The rivalry among local outfits of various political parties recently hit hard the functioning of Container Corporation of India’s newly commissioned terminal at Durgapur in West Bengal. The operation of the terminal had to be suspended for nearly 10 days as the road movement of consignments to and from it came to a halt.

There was picketing on roads leading to the terminal, affecting those bringing consignments by road to the terminal for stuffing and onward movement by rail. As a result, Concor not only lost some valued customers but later faced problems in getting them back.

Those who staged demonstrations demanded jobs. Some even demanded transport contracts. “We had a tough time explaining to them that Concor being an organisation under the Railway Ministry must follow certain guidelines laid down by the Government. But they would not listen,” said a spokesman for Concor.
