Politics States - Andhra Pradesh Jockeying begins for YSR’s successor
Mr Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy Hyderabad, Sept 5 to fill the sudden leadership vacuum created by the death of Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, who was into his second term and wielded clout at the Centre as well. There are visible signs and talk from sections of the party, the Cabinet and legislators that YSR’s son and MP from Kadapa, Mr Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, should be installed the new leader of the State party and next Chief Minister. Slowly trying to come to grips with the unexpected turn of events, some of the loyal ists of the departed ‘Kadapa lion’, including Dr K. V. P. Ramachandra Rao (MP), have started building pressure in favour of Mr Jagan Mohan Reddy and comparing the situation to Rajiv Gandhi becoming the Prime Minister in 1984 on Indira Gandhi’s assassination. But this move is reportedly not finding favour with the Party High Command as also some State leaders, who are making their own plans. Indications are that a new leader would be elected after a meeting of the Congress Legislature Party is convened next week. Among the several options before the High Command are either asking the 150-odd Congress MLAs to choose a leader or picking a candidate of its choice. — Our Bureau More Stories on : Politics | Andhra Pradesh
