Malay Mukherjee to take over as Essar Steel CEO

Mumbai, Sept. 4 The Essar Group has appointed Mr Malay Mukherjee, a member of the Arcelor Mittal board of directors, as the Chief Executive Officer of its steel business, effective October 15.

Mr Mukherjee will take over from the current CEO, Mr J. Mehra, who has been elevated as Director, Essar Group, and will continue to support the Group’s promoter-directors in business strategy, investments, corporate relations and corporate governance.

In a bid to support its global growth strategy, Essar has been strengthening its management team over the last two years by inducting industry veterans to lead its various businesses.

Mr Shashi Ruia, Chairman, Essar Group, said Mr Mukherjee comes with valuable international experience in the steel business and is an excellent addition to Essar Group’s leadership team. “Our steel business has grown by leaps and bounds under the stewardship of Mr Mehra. His new assignment will enable Essar to continue to draw on his rich experience,” he added.

Mr Mukherjee is an alumnus of IIT- Kharagpur and holds a master’s degree in mining from the USSR State Commission in Moscow.

He was also a member of Arcelor’s Group Management Board, with the responsibility of operations in Asia, Africa, CIS, mining, stainless, pipes and tubes, besides technology.
