New Delhi, Aug. 28 The Minister of State for Environment and Forests, Mr Jairam Ramesh, at the 49th convention of the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers, said that the Indian automobile industry would move to mandatory fuel-efficiency standards in the next two years.

This is in continuation of the labelling norms for four consumer durable goods: air-conditioners, CFC lamps, and refrigerators.

The Minister said the transition to mandatory fuel norms will lead to fuel savings for vehicle owners.

Second, it will also result in macro saving for the country, as at present 75 per cent of auto fuel is imported. The transition will also result in a greener environment.

The transition to new fuel-efficiency standards will be in line with the international climate change agreement and India will adopt the CO2 norms taken by Japan and China instead of the US and UK.
