The match manufacturing units in Kovilpatti are on the verge of collapse. According to Mr M.Paramasivam, President, National Small Match Manufacturers Association, Kovilpatti, the cost of production has risen , making the units unviable. A bundle consisting of 600 match boxes with production cost of Rs 210 is being sold for Rs 205 , resulting in heavy losses. The key raw material potassium chlorate is not available in the State and the arrival from Puducherry has dwindled due to a crack down on factories there. While 50kg of potassium chlorate sells at Rs 2,000 locally, the imported material costs around Rs 3,200.
