Supplyco helps keep prices down

Thiruvananthapuram, Aug. 27

The Kerala State Civil Supplies Corporation (Supplyco) has said that open market prices of sugar and dal are on a downward trend thanks to its massive market intervention programme. A spokesman said here that the price of sugar that had peaked at Rs 35 a kg had since fallen by a margin of Rs 2 to Rs 3. Price of dal witnessed a steeper drop to Rs 70/80 a kg from Rs 100. Supplyco has taken care to ensure adequate stocks of essential commodities for over six lakh customers on a daily basis through its Onam Fairs and around 1,300 other fair price outlets. The public sector utility had supplied essentials including rice and sugar free of cost to 20 lakh BPL families in the last one week, the spokesman added. Distribution of kits, which include 12 kg rice, to 1.2 lakh tribal families is in progress.
