Cotton Corporation to set up depots in Madurai, Coimbatore

Our Bureau

Coimbatore, Aug. 24 To enable the spinning mills in the State get quality cotton at reduced prices, Cotton Corporation of India will set up depots in Coimbatore and Madurai the coming cotton season (October 2009-September 2010).

These depots will store the cotton procured from Gujarat and Maharashtra and sell them to the mills , the Union Minister for Textiles, Mr Dayanidhi Maran, said here.

CCI would use the warehouse/godowns and premises of some private mills for storing the commodity, he said.

Production inadequate

“While TN is the largest cotton consuming state, the production volume is grossly inadequate to meet the spinning sector’s demand.

Transportation cost is a huge burden on the mill sector.

With the CCI depots here, the mills would be able to procure at reduced prices and this would help reduce the yarn cost approximately by Rs 2/kg,’ he said.

The Minister urged the industry, particularly the conventional textile sector to ‘think differently, beyond individual units for the growth of the sector.

‘For India to have double digit growth, attributes such as job creation, inclusive economic growth, infrastructure development and health care improvement are minimum requirements.

Technical textiles will play an important role in all these areas. There is therefore an urgent need to develop standards, build capacities and look for conversion technologies for technical textiles to meet Indian conditions’.

SIMA jubilee fete

Earlier, he unveiled the SIMA-PSG Textiles Technical Training Institute plaque at the SITRA Auditorium, where the Platinum Jubilee Celebration function of Southern India Mills Associatin (SIMA) was held.
