Hardware Printer, copier market drops 13%: Gartner
Our Bureau New Delhi, Aug 21 With the global downturn compelling consumers and businesses to delay buying decisions, the printer, copier and multifunctional products (MFP) market in India grossed just 1.1 million units in the first half of 2009. The shipments were almost 13 per cent lower compared to first half of 2008, as per Gartner estimates. “The impact of the global recession was clearly visible in the Indian market as consumers and businesses are either delaying or cancelling their decision to buy print devices,” said Mr Vishal Tripathi, Principal Research Analyst, Gartner. Mr Tripathi said that even new sales were getting impacted due to credit crunch and tight budgets. According to Gartner, each of the top five vendors - with the exception to Canon - recorded a decline in the first half of 2009. In the last year, Canon has strengthened its position in the market, Gartner said. Commenting on the market, Mr Tripathi pointed out that given the freeze on hardware spending and the sharper focus on cost cutting, vendors were looking at managed print services as alternative solutions to help users cut costs and better manage their print fleet. “This will also allow them to save money on capex. Managed print services can help businesses understand and reduce the cost associated with printing and copying through product consolidation or redeployment,” he said.
