Tata Tele woos Japanese cos on DoCoMo strength

Coordinated strategy to offer end-to-end services.

‘Japanese companies are more comfortable dealing with DoCoMo officials’

Adith Charlie

Mumbai, Aug 20 Tata Teleservices (TTSL) is flaunting its NTT DoCoMo connection to win enterprise-wide telecommunication deals from Japanese companies for Indian operations.

NTT DoCoMo provides enterprise services to several Fortune 500 Japanese companies, some of which have large-scale operations here. These include Sony, Toyota, Fujitsu etc.

End-to-end connectivity

DoCoMo has now despatched nine of its executives to TTSL premises in India.

“Through DoCoMo representatives, we reach out to Japanese companies as it makes more sense for them to have an end-to-end provider on both ends of the spectrum. Moreover, they are more comfortable in dealing with fellow Japanese company officials,” Mr Lloyd Mathias, President - Business Development, VAS & Chief Marketing Officer, told Business Line.

Through its enterprise business, TTSL focusses on providing end-to-end connectivity and network solutions to small, medium or large corporate clients. Its customers include HCl, Aviva and Whirlpool.

Last November, NTT DoCoMo picked up a 26-per cent stake in TTSL for about Rs 13,000 crore. As part of the integration process, key executives from both companies have come together to form the Business & Technology Cooperation Committee (BTCC).

Here, five subcommittees have been established to work on issues such as network, devices, value-added services, enterprise business etc.

Pan-India presence

“We sent our staff to TTSL’s business units responsible for overall business administration, finance, marketing, value-added services and network. The expatriates are generally young and they are assigned the responsibility to monitor TTSL’s operational status,” a spokesperson for NTT DoCoMo told analysts recently.

Earlier this year, Tata Telservices launched GSM services under the ‘Tata DoCoMo’ brand.

The company expects to be a pan-India GSM player by the end of this fiscal, said Mr Mathias. It is in the process of readying national campaign by Diwali.
