Outlook States - Tamil Nadu ‘Demand for precision machines picking up’
Mr Yoji Taguchi R.Yegya Narayanan Coimbatore, Aug. 19 The demand for machines needed by the die and mould, and sheet metal industries, which had contracted earlier this year mainly due to slowdown in the automobile sector, is expected to pick up with the revival of the industrial sector. This is the assessmentr of MrYoji Taguchi, CEO and Managing Director, MC Craftsman Machinery Pvt Ltd (MCCM), Coimbatore, a subsidiary of the Mitsubishi Corporation, Japan. He anticipates greater demand for the precision machines being marketed by his company in India because of foreign car makers’ increasing emphasis on localisation of components with a view to achieving price competitiveness. InvestmentSpeaking to Business Line, MrTaguchi said Mitsubishi Corporation has joined hands with the Coimbatore-based Craftsman Automation Pvt Ltd in establishing MCCM at an investment of about Rs 15 crore in Arasur near Coimbatore. While 70 per cent of the investment in the new company was made by Mitsubishi, the balance was contributed by the Craftsman Automation, which has a long association with the Japanese giant in servicing its products. He said machines such as Electrical Discharge Machines (EDMs) and Laser cutting machines (laser) needed by die and mould and sheet metal industries, which were produced by Mitsubishi Corporation would be marketed and serviced by the company. Some of the major beneficiaries of these products were automobile, power equipment, aero space, farm implements and mobile handset manufacturers. Market size tinyMr Taguchi, referring to the size of the Indian market for EDMs, said while the market size for it in Japan/ China/ and Europe was around 2,500-3,000 units, in India, it was only 100 units and the share of Mitsubishi was about 30 per cent of it. Asked about the possibility of establishing a manufacturing facility in India by Mitsubishi, he pointed out that the company has manufacturing facility outside Japan only in China for EDM machines. Even in other regions such as Europe and the US which had far higher demand than India, Mitsubishi has not established manufacturing plants. Several parameters such as market size, quality of raw material etc were to be studied before taking a decision and declined to specify any timeframe for his company to take a decision on this issue.
