Thiruvananthapuram, Aug. 16

The Cooperative Academy of Professional Education (Cape), a self-financing educational institution in the cooperative sector, is embarking on an expansion spree as it completes 10 years in existence.

An MBA college and finishing school in Alappuzha and a nursing college in Kochi are in the final stages of construction, according to Dr K. Sukumaran Nair, Director, Cape.

Cape was promoted as the cooperative sector’s answer to the entry of private managements in self-financing education sector and their fees structure.

It is promoted by the Department of Cooperation, and is an autonomous society under the Government of Kerala.

CAPE MISSION

The Cape mission is to set up a network of self-financing educational institutions in the cooperative sector across the State.

It has since set up six self-financing engineering colleges, one medical college and a nursing school in the State. At least 7,500 students are enrolled each year.

The admissions to 50 per cent general seats and 35 per cent management seats are made on merit at Government-determined fees as recommended by the Justice Muhammed Committee.

The rest 15 per cent are earmarked as NRI quota and are filled by the academy based on merit but at comparatively higher fees. A well-equipped cooperative hospital is also being set up in Alappuzha.

The year-long 10th anniversary celebrations will kick off on Tuesday in Thiruvananthapuram, which will be inaugurated by the Chief Minister, Mr V. S. Achuthanandan.
