Employment Govt bets big on technical textiles for job creation Will employ around three lakh people by 2012 Sales to rise 11% to Rs 66,441 Investment of Rs 5,000 cr Our Bureau New Delhi, Aug. 12 The Government expects the technical textiles segment, which is engaged in the production of a specialised industrial commodity, to employ around three lakh additional workers by 2012. The sector’s sales are also expected to rise 11 per cent this year to touch Rs 66,441 crore by 2012. “We expect an investment of Rs 5,000 crore (in technical textiles sector) and employment, which is approximately nine lakh at present, to increase to 12 lakh, by 2012,” the Textiles Minister, Mr Dayanidhi Maran, said at Technotex-2009, a function jointly organised by the Ministry and FICCI. Unlike conventional textiles, which are highly export intensive, these are import-intensive and are mostly used by industrial houses for niche purposes. The market size of the industry is around Rs 37,000 crore. Mr Maran has been bullish about the technical textiles segment. In an interview in June, he had expressed the need to focus on manufacturing technical textiles. “The technical textile segment could bring in good market value. It’s a growing market and I will ensure we start manufacturing it domestically,” Mr Maran had said. India imports technical textiles from China, Hong Kong, Thailand, Italy and Germany.
