Vijaya Bank to hire 1,000 this fiscal

Our Bureau

Hyderabad, Aug. 12 Vijaya Bank will be hiring about 1,000 in various roles before the end of the financial year 2009-10.

The Mangalore-based bank, which is engaged in campus recruitments to hire 160 specialists (MBAs), would soon begin the process for recruiting 500 clerks.

“In addition, we are laterally filling up over 300 positions in Scale III and III for which the interviews are on the anvil,” Mr Albert Tauro, Chairman and Managing Director, Vijaya Bank, told newspersons after inaugurating the 1,108th branch at Madhapur here on Wednesday.

Besides catering to the manpower needs of branch expansion programme, the recruitment was also necessitated due to retirement of over 800 employees during the year, he said.

The bank is planning to shed its image as a South India-focussed entity. A majority of over 92 branches to be opened during the year would be in Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Central India and Punjab, Mr Tauro said.

In order to achieve its target of 22 per cent in total business (which is at Rs 92,000 crore now), the bank would be leveraging technology products.

“Within a couple of weeks after launching SMS alerts, we had 40,000 registrations which might touch one lakh by month-end. Mobile banking will be launched in next two/three weeks. This will be followed by phone-banking in two months,” he said.

The bank is expecting to receive Rs 700 crore from the Government soon as part of previously-announced capital augmentation scheme.

“This will help us maintain capital to risk-weighted assets ratio (CRAR) at above 12 per cent,” he said. The CRAR now stands at 13.34 per cent.
