Jhum cultivation

Tiwa tribal women cleaning the Jhum field using ‘Chaldeng’ in Khaweakhry village in Karbi Anglong district of Assam. ‘Chaldeng’ is made out of bamboo and tree leaves which are used by the community to protect them from rain. Jhum or shifting cultivation is the traditional way of cultivation of north eastern states, which is based on indigenous knowledge. Jhum is referred to as ’slash and burn’ method of agriculture and is mainly practised by the indigenous tribals.
