GI tags sought for veena, lock

Madurai, Aug. 9

The Tamil Nadu State Council has taken steps to get Geographical Indication Tags of Thanjavur Veena and Dindigul Lock, establishing their place of origin. These are the first two items among the 10 unique items, for which steps have been initiated, according to Mr S. Vincent, Member-Secretary, Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology. Giving details about the steps taken for Thanjavur veena, a research officer in the council said that some well known followers o f classical music had insisted on GI for it as the “Thanjavur veena gives a unique sound because of its special wood.” —
